The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA), in coordination with the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), is preparing to conduct targeted water sampling in Luckey as part of its ongoing commitment to protect public health and ensure the safety of local drinking water.
Recent independent water testing conducted by The Toledo Blade prompted this review. Preliminary findings from that data showed some contaminant detections; however, all levels remain well within state and federal drinking water standards. The Blade’s report also raises the concern of radon, which can be from naturally occurring sources.
Out of an abundance of caution, Ohio EPA will begin collecting water samples at key community locations, including all three Eastwood Local School buildings and the Pemberville main and two branch libraries. Certified laboratories will analyze these samples for radiological contaminants using established protocols.
The results will be reviewed carefully, and any concerns will prompt immediate coordination with school officials, local government, and residents to determine the next steps.
The Ohio EPA has communicated with the Eastwood Schools superintendent, the Pemberville Public Library, and the mayor of Luckey to provide updates and assure them that there is currently no cause for alarm.
As testing moves forward, Ohio EPA will continue to share results and, once available, provide the community with testing details.
